Data in transit

Data moving across a network, as opposed to data at rest, which is stored on a drive.

Appears in the course and exam description (CED): 3.1.C.1

Why it matters in Unit 3

Data in transit can be captured on any link it crosses, which puts its confidentiality and integrity at risk.

Example

A password sent over café Wi-Fi is data in transit. Encryption keeps the payload unreadable even if it is captured.

Learn it properly, with a checkpoint Networks: hosts, packets and the devices that move them
